"And Place"
Time and Place and how it passes, and where it goes, and how we spend it, and if it was worth it;
And what was accomplished and what failed, and why did we do the things we did, and where did we find the time, and what could we have been doing instead;
And where were our heads at, and who were we with and who were we thinking of, and what time was it and where did it all go;
And why did the hands of the clock go one way but not the other, and in the end what are we really if not objects of time.

So I wrote a zine and if you’d like a freshly minted copy you should let me know and it will appear in your hands after a whirlwind descends from the sky and pays you a visit inside your home.
It’s predominantly about girls.
I think I’m going to try to write a zine every semester. The next one will either be about hip-hop or television. And the one after that will probably be about food.
I have a lot to say about food.

this room smells like caribbean cooler if you stand in the right spots.
this week, at some point, i'm pretty sure, i had to write something down on my hand so i wouldn't forget. this is the sum total of school work i've had to tackle with open palms.
i'm really busy all the time and all my eggs are in one solid basket. the basket is made of titanium. lately there's been harp-playing elves, bowling, praying & tearing, two truths & a daring, musicing, new york citying, wining and dining, hatting, mountaining, tooth-picking, skipping, sleepovering, boarding & feathering, and hugging!
honestly i'm just in it all for the hugging. if only somehow hugs could be combined with tea tree oil..
it's weird that for a while there i had a lot going for me and then just as quickly i gave it up for old habits that nothing ever really comes from because nothing ever could. i had a dream about this and in the dream i felt like a weasel.
i'm just glad i didn't feel like a rat, or else i would have been shot in the head thanks, martin scorsese's the departed.
i keep a notepad in my back pocket and sometimes i write down bad ideas i can never find those pages when i need them.
i would have never thought the format was for me, but this one sounds a bunch like a really fizzling dismemberment plan song. and i can't complain.
oh yeah, we picked names out of a hat for the "dress-another-person-up-as-themself-in-30-years" halloween dinner and i picked the best g-d name available. i'm going to get a cramp in my creative hand for this one.
zine progress: swimmingly fear of zine failure: inevitable

| Maybe it's more fun being a ghost. |
[01 Sep 2006|11:02am] |
An old, wise magician dated a tree elf still in training pants. It was weird, and against the laws of the forest, but no one seemed to mind. They kept it hidden under a cloak of secrecy and vanishing. They conjured a walking corpse to do their bidding and protect the magic between them. The walking corpse could beat up all opposing white knights. And it was astonishing because the corpse was dead inside, and had not a thing to offer the world but malice and abortion spells. The tree elf was a fickle fairy, who flew from white knight to white knight with ill regard for the consequences. Her tounge was of the wicked sort, lashing out only to protect it's own wings when in the wrong. The white knight had had enough of this crazy bullshit. The old, wise magician thought he had hit the jackpot and thrust his staff into the air in celebration. The old, wise magician would discover he wasn't so wise after all.
I'm a ghost now. Boo.

Well, I'm still lazy, but now I have an actual music blog:

| 4.16.06 (The Radio Dept., Junior Boys, Wet Secrets) |
[16 Apr 2006|08:13pm] |
The Radio Dept. "The Worst Taste In Music" (download) from Pet Grief out on Labrador
The synths remind me of Angelo Badalamenti scoring an alternate take on Twin Peaks where Laura Palmer is killed by the menacing BOB not because he so badly wanted to be her, but because Bobby Briggs and James Hurley had, collectively, the worst taste in music. I'm not sure if the song poses the question, but why is it that the title always holds true for those that our loved ones' love more? The Radio Dept. just sighs and offers a shoulder to lean on, and in the end that's all a friend can do.
Junior Boys "Max" (download) from the See You On The Moon compilation out on Paper Bag Records
It's a compilation for children, so one can assume the real nature of the song is innocent at heart. But it's the beloved Junior Boys, and they can't help but make the image of staying up with someone until they drift off to sleep depressingly sexy. So in a way, they've made an erotic lullaby. But in many other ways, it's just a chillingly beautiful song. But I can't imagine falling asleep to it.
Wet Secrets "It's Hard To Meet Somebody (Living As A Disembodied Head)" (download) from A Whale Of A Cow, self-released
The Radio Dept. and Junior Boys shove me deep into my own thoughts where I can mull around vexations and dreams, while on the other hand, the Wet Secrets have me wondering how exactly one becomes a disembodied head and empathetically nodding my head in agreement that, yes, it must be hard to meet people.

| 2.28.06 (Mclusky, Why?, TV On The Radio) |
[28 Feb 2006|04:33pm] |
Mclusky "The Difference Between Me And You Is That I'm Not On Fire" (download) from Mcluskyism (3CD Limited Edition) out on Too Pure
It's a surprise to find this unreleased track (which also sports the title of their final album) on the aptly titled "C Sides" section of the definitive post-humous collection by the best band ever. It shows, to and even greater degree than before, the versatile nature of the rocking beast they had in them. It makes me think they should have had more to say. But alas the God of Rock deemed it not to be and smote the landdwellers for their praise of false idols.
Why? "Dumb Hummer" (download) from Rubber Traits EP out on Anticon
More Why?!! I wish every day I woke up there would be more Why?. I'd never get tired of it. I hear there's a little more Why? coming this year. And that's good news. I also heard that a Why? storke factory and managment facility is being built that drops little Why? babies on the porches of aspiring young couples to feed and raise, and that it should be open by early 2007. But I think I may have heard that in my head. If only we could dance like he does.
TV On The Radio "Dirty Whirlwind" (download) from Return to Cookie Mountain out on Interscope
Mastering the treacherous climb up Cookie Mountain and crowning the icy, chocolate-chipped peak as our own was hardly the end of the struggle. Because once you climb a Cookie Mountain, how else do you get down? You eat your way down. By the time we reached the base we'd lost half our men to sugar exposure. Those of us who survived walked shakily to eagerly embrace real earth. We all looked eachother over and smiled. We were all dirty. Because when you're eating a mountian to save your life, you don't worry about the crumbs. And dirty is the right sound for it.

| 2.22.06 (Fiery Furnaces, Sunset Rubdown, Band of Horses) |
[22 Feb 2006|02:08pm] |
Fiery Furnaces "Waiting To Know You" (download) "Police Sweater Blood Vow" (download) from Bitter Tea out on Fat Possum
Like it or not, Blueberry Boat really had something. And maybe it's still here and we're just not listening hard enough. Maybe the Friedbergers have mastered the art of integrating blips and bleeps so adeptly we can't even notice. Or maybe it's just not as special anymore. Something feels missing but somehow it's still complete. It obviously needs more time. The change they've made is so polarizing, even more so than Rehearsing My Choir because that concept could be ignored. There are a few moments where something can be heard that harks back to old, but it's not enough. Without more time to take hold, people will start jumping off the decks and I think I might join them.
Sunset Rubdown "Shut Up I Am Dreaming of Places Where Lovers Have Wings" (download) from Shut Up I Am Dreaming out on Absolutely Kosher
I realize I've already posted Sunset Rubdown tracks, which I think really says something when I continue to be compelled to post more. This song is the title track off the freshly recorded full length with a full band and the works. And it sounds lovely. While more comparable in power than sound, this is kind of like the bloated, whispered, less immediate, 8-minute version of "I'll Believe in Anything".
Band of Horses "Wicked Gil" (download) from Everything All The Time out on Sub Pop
Comparisons to other bands are really easy to make (and are so very lazy) and while I know I make them, I try my hardest to steer clear. Unfortunately, Band of Horses sound exactly like My Morning Jacket and the Shins having a little horse baby and watching it trot off into the sunset, covered in blood.

| MM002: Destroyer - "You Gotta Wonder" RE RELEASE |
[20 Feb 2006|08:07pm] |
Well, it took being constantly bombarded with requests since I first posted it, but, here:
A nifty little Destroyer rarities comp I put together in August and took the task of updating fresh and new today.
The bitrates are a little better this time. I added tracks and deleted some (primarily those from Ideas for Songs and a few live tracks just so that this thing wasn't massive)
tracklist:

to download: copy and paste the url below into your browser and replace "hxxp" with "http" (this was a necessary step, maybe) then follow the directions to download. you'll need to unzip the contents of it when it's complete.
hxxp://s60.yousendit.com/d.aspx?id=1EC04S1BRK01B0MTK1PE102XR8
Tell me if the link dies and I'll replace it, MAYBE.

| 2.20.06 (Stephin Merritt, Anna Oxygen, Kimya Dawson) |
[20 Feb 2006|06:05pm] |
Stephin Merritt "What A Fucking Lovely Day!" (download) from Showtunes soundtrack out on Nonesuch
Man, I don't know what I was expecting. Some of the songs on this soundtrack are truly awful. Any saving grace from Merritt's instrumental work is overshadowed by the most overly garish and tuneless "showtune" crooning you can imagine. This track shines a bit, and that helps.
Anna Oxygen "Mechanical Fish" (download) from This Is An Excercise out on Kill Rock Stars
Honestly, I just tried to find something more bizarre than Stephin Merritt's showtunes. It's like Kim Gordon and Chuck D on "Kool Thing" but taken to the nth degree and with talking fish and nuts and bolts.
Kimya Dawson "12/26" (download) from Remember That I Love You out on K Records
Despite being on K Records and being one-half of the core of The Moldy Peaches (say what you will), I've avoided Kimya Dawson like the plague and embraced Adam Green to the fullest. After Adam Green threw dirt in my face for the last time with Jacket Full of Danger (don't listen to it), I gave her a real chance. And of course I click to the song rife with death.

| 2.18.06 (Acid Casuals, Hot Chip, Immaculate Machine) |
[18 Feb 2006|07:37pm] |
Acid Casuals "Bowl Me Over" (download) from Omni out on Placid Casual
Super Furry Animals side project. If you haven't already skipped over, what else can I say, it's a good song. I haven't really let the rest of the album soak in yet, but this is a carry over for the EP from last year, and it still has me harmonizing.
Hot Chip "Over & Over" (download) from The Warning out on DFA/EMI
It feels like leaps and bounds in front of old Hot Chip stuff. I have to wonder if being on DFA has something to do with that. I'm too busy bobbing my head up and down to see the screen clearly enough to find out.
Immaculate Machine "No Caution" (download) from The View EP out on Mint Records
It's Carl Newman's little cute niece's cute band that has played from time to cute time with the New Pornographers on cute occasion. This song is trying not to be cute, but it fails!

| 02.16.06 (Prince, Cat Power, Make Believe) |
[16 Feb 2006|07:44pm] |
Prince "Black Sweat" (download) from 3121 out on Universal, but visit NPG instead
Oh Prince Nelson. Thank you for this. Nix that, thank you for being you. You've never let me down. Even when you have, you did it because you had to educate me. You're years and years beyond the rest of us. We can only hope to reach up into the sky and pluck out a star of our own that shines half as bright as you.
Cat Power & Karen Elson "I Love You (Me Either) (Je t'aime mon non plus)" (download) from the Gainsbourg Interprété Par Serge Gainsbourg tribute out on Barclay Records
I hadn't heard anything about this tribute, but I think i'll start looking forward to it. The line-up is sketchy, but let's not let that stop us. Kind of wish they were still in French, though. But I'm pretty sure being in French would probably make Placebo's offering all the worse, so we are blessed.
Make Believe "Roman Polanski" (download) from the OOP vinyl edition of the Make Believe EP out on Flameshovel
I've been collecting as many Make Believe rarities as I can possibly somehow muster up and make appear in thin air. This cut, for some reason of another, is a cut above the rest. The intensity, brevity, and thumping nature of the thing wins me over every time.

| 2.15.06 (Of Montreal, Sunset Rubdown, Ariel Pink) |
[15 Feb 2006|07:17pm] |
Of Montreal "Christian Son" (download) from the Microuniversity 7''
I like this one better than the title cut, but what a filthy mouth. Only 300 copies made, but only 0 available, allegedly. Kevin Barnes even makes unavailability charming.
Sunset Rubdown "Three Colours" (download) from Sunset Rubdown EP out on Global Symphonic
Solo side project to full band side project. There aren't enough keyboards and 9-volt batteries in the world to power the giant wolf float, so Spencer Krug is parading with snakes.
Ariel Pink "Beverly Kills (Freaks With Golden Heirs)" (download) from unreleased Scared Famous out probably eventually on Paw Tracks
I fell in love with this song after seeing the video for it on the Paw Tracks website in promotion for Worn Copy. The actual album track isn't as great as it is in my head.
