4.16.06 (The Radio Dept., Junior Boys, Wet Secrets)
The Radio Dept.
"The Worst Taste In Music" (download)
from Pet Grief out on Labrador
The synths remind me of Angelo Badalamenti scoring an alternate take on Twin Peaks where Laura Palmer is killed by the menacing BOB not because he so badly wanted to be her, but because Bobby Briggs and James Hurley had, collectively, the worst taste in music. I'm not sure if the song poses the question, but why is it that the title always holds true for those that our loved ones' love more? The Radio Dept. just sighs and offers a shoulder to lean on, and in the end that's all a friend can do.
Junior Boys
"Max" (download)
from the See You On The Moon compilation out on Paper Bag Records
It's a compilation for children, so one can assume the real nature of the song is innocent at heart. But it's the beloved Junior Boys, and they can't help but make the image of staying up with someone until they drift off to sleep depressingly sexy. So in a way, they've made an erotic lullaby. But in many other ways, it's just a chillingly beautiful song. But I can't imagine falling asleep to it.
Wet Secrets
"It's Hard To Meet Somebody (Living As A Disembodied Head)" (download)
from A Whale Of A Cow, self-released
The Radio Dept. and Junior Boys shove me deep into my own thoughts where I can mull around vexations and dreams, while on the other hand, the Wet Secrets have me wondering how exactly one becomes a disembodied head and empathetically nodding my head in agreement that, yes, it must be hard to meet people.
Elevate me later.
